How to Replace the Batteries in a Cordless Drill Battery

Cordless drills can be extremely useful in many different circumstances, from hanging up picture frames to home renovation projects. The cordless drills free you from the constant hindrance of electrical outlets and the entanglements drill cords always seem to knot themselves into. It may be useful, however, to have replacement batteries on hand, just in case the battery in use runs out of power.

Step 1 : Turn the power off on your cordless drill.

Step 2 : Hold down the battery lock button on the rear of the drill. The exact location of the locking button varies based on the make and model of the cordless drill.

Step 3 : Pull and slide out the battery to the cordless drill. Once you begin to remove the battery you can let go of the battery lock button. Place the spent battery into a charger to power up the battery for future use.

Step 3: Insert the replacement battery. You do not need to press the battery button when reinserting batteries. There is a positive and negative charge logo on both of the battery and the inside of the drill. Insert the battery so the positive and negative logos on the two pieces match.

Step 4: Power on the cordless drill and you are ready to work.

Tips & Warnings

If your battery no longer holds a charge, discard it. However, do not simply throw it away. The battery can leak hazardous material into the garbage dump and nearby water system. Instead, take the battery to a local office store, such as Office Max, Staples, or Office Depot. The stores are able to recycle the used batteries properly.
