Chemistry
The three chemistries used in today's cordless drills are Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium-Ion (Li-ion). The most common is NiCd. In a basic sense the mAh rating of a cell denotes the 'run time'. The higher the rating the longer the battery will run before needing to be recharged. Common range for mAh ratings is between 1200 mAh and 2700 mAh. Most cordless drill batteries are built using 1200 mAh or 1500 mAh cells. High-end brand name drill batteries are commonly built with 2200 mAh or 2400 mAh cells.
Application
How you use your cordless drill will also help determine how much you are willing to invest in a new battery. Someone who is using their drills in Do-It-Yourself projects may be far less willing to pay for a Ni-MH 2700 mAh rebuild than the contractor who uses their drills for everyday commercial applications.
Knowing the basics of battery rebuilding will make you an informed consumer. Find a service provider who is willing to offer a warranty on their work and one willing to provide printed results of the post-build prime, charge and/or test of your newly rebuilt battery.
