Chai tea
Chai has only recently become popular in western countries despite it being enjoyed in many parts of the world for centuries, especially in India.
Like any tea, Chai can vary slightly in flavour. Basically, it is a black tea, brewed with a selection of spices including: cloves, pepper, cardamon, ginger and cinnamon. It is a sweet tea, that is served hot usually with milk and sugar.
Although it is sweet, it does have a definite bite to it because of the spices used.
Green tea
Green teas offers a real fresh leaf taste, is high in antioxidant properties and lower in caffeine.
If you would like to try green tea with a twist, there are many varieties which combine lemon or orange to give the it a citrus twist. Similarly, other varieties combine artichoke and other flavours with green tea. As it is one of the four main types of teas there are many flavours and varieties for you to try.
Green tea is generally served hot and with no milk or sugar added.
Chamomile
Chamomile tea is well-known for assisting in the relief of tension, treating a sore stomach, relieving stress, helping relax the muscles and restful sleep. It's the perfect tea to brew after a long day at work, or if you are having trouble sleeping.
Chamomile is also a great tea to serve guests on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Rooibos Tea
Rooibos tea is a healthier alternative to other tea varieties as it contains no caffeine and is low in tannin. It also contains Iron, Zinc, Sodium, Copper, Potassium and Calcium.
The only place where this is grown is in the Cedarberg Mountains, north of Cape Town in South Africa. It was only towards the end of the 19th Century that the people living in the surrounding areas realised that the leaves of the bush made a fine tea when brewed hot.
This tea is generally served hot with milk.
Iced tea
In the hot summer heat nothing beats a refreshing iced tea. There are some teas which are especially designed to be served hot or cold, so it might be a good idea to try these. It is always better to brew your tea strong when making iced tea as you need to make the flavour strong to compensate for the ice you will add later that will dilute it.
