• The push reel mower – Perfect for urban dwellers with a smaller lawn, the push reel mower cuts with a scissor-like action of rotating blades passing over a stationary knife. The eco-benefit: it requires no gas or electricity, resulting in zero emissions. In addition to being a good environmental choice, manual reel lawn mowers are more economical to own and require little maintenance outside of having the blades sharpened regularly.
• Electric – These lawn mowers not only run quietly, save fuel and maintenance costs, they are also Eco Options certified at The Home Depot. If your lawn is under a half-acre, you may prefer the mobility of a cordless model that operates using a rechargeable battery. Some models come equipped with mulching and bagging options for easy composting.
• Gas-powered – Today's gas-powered lawn mowers are much more efficient than older models. And better efficiency lessens the impact on the environment with lower emissions. A gas-powered lawn mower is an ideal option for large lawns that might have uneven terrain.
Each year, during select days, Canadians can bring their inefficient mowers, trimmers, blowers and chainsaws to The Home Depot stores across Canada as part of Mow Down Pollution. The event, run in partnership with Summerhill Impact, is Canada's only gas lawn equipment exchange program, offering free recycling services and instant rebates to purchase zero- or low-emission alternatives. Since program inception in 2001, a total of 34,027 inefficient mowers and trimmers have been responsibly recycled and more than 1,100 tonnes of greenhouse gas and smog forming emissions have been prevented.
