I have always been fond of using a Uniden walkie talkie, as it is one of the best ways of communication especially in the wild. Whenever I go for a hike with my partner, I make sure we have a good method of communication so we can avoid any unnecessary danger. I have been using the Uniden GMR2872-2CK Waterproof Two-Way Radio for quite a while now and I wanted to share this review so that people out there who are searching for a good walkie talkie would find this model and make use of its benefits, just like how I and my partner did.
Design
The one thing that makes this model better than others is the fact that it's waterproof, so you won't have to worry about getting an electric shock while hiking on a rainy day. It's submersible in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. It's especially useful when you walk through wet areas and shallow waters, as how I and my partner do out in the wild. In appearance, I think this model is very unique and attractive, too. The yellow body is quite different from other common black scanners. It's also designed to be compact, lightweight, and flexible enough for optimal use during trips, travels, and various outdoor activities.
The LCD display is big, backlit, and has very clear digits which make reading the information on the screen very easy to do. You can easily trace the frequency that you're looking for through the screen display. The pair comes in a package with all the essential accessories including two belt clips and a charging cradle which has a dock for each unit. The rechargeable batteries are very useful because you don't have to replace them every now and then. Also, you don't have to open the unit to replace the batteries. You can just position them on the cradle, just like a rechargeable cordless telephone.
Scanning and Audio Output
This Uniden walkie talkie has 22 channels - 15 GMRS and 7 FRS frequencies which have enough channels to keep you updates with the police calls, fire and emergency calls, marine, aircraft, and other service channels, and ham radio stations. The 7 FRS are dedicated for personal frequencies, giving you several options for you and your partner to use. You can always select whichever frequency you want as long as it is an FRS channel.
As a personal radio, this model has a lot of excellent features. You can create your own group for all your companions where you are all set to one frequency and only you can hear your conversations. In this mode, you cannot receive transmissions out of your group, which means that the mode is exclusive for your group use. You can set a group code from numbers 0-142 and each of your group members should have the same code. Each of you also get to set a nickname which appears on the screen of the receiver when you make a call. This is excellent for personal communications especially if you don't want anyone else to hear about what you're discussing.
You can also set 10 different call tone alerts which indicate when someone is trying to contact you. If you're sleeping or you don't want to be disturbed by the noise of transmissions, you can also set the unit to silent mode. The roger beep is an easy indicator which tells you if you have successfully received and sent the message to your partner or group mates. You can also make direct calls to specific individuals which you want to talk to privately. One of the best features of this device is the automatic channel change which sets you and all your group members to a different frequency if the frequency you are on is interrupted or full of other users. You can do this automatically with a simple touch of a button.
The channel scan feature lets you scan through all 22 channels to hear the activities happening in each channel. The two-second delay lets you listen to the channel when it's active, and after two seconds of inactivity, that's when the scanner will jump to the next channel. This keep you updated even with late responses.
The power boost button provides maximum range for your device so you can transmit messages even at great distances. The maximum range of the unit's transmission is 28 miles, dependent on the environment and surrounding blockages.
Other Features
The LCD display indicates the level of battery life, much like a mobile phone. It also indicates when power is running low so you can be ready to charge it. The keypad lock feature prevents the accidental changes in settings and frequencies. The battery life of the unit can last up to 12 hours. It also has a power saver mode to conserve energy consumption.
Conclusion
I don't know about you, but I think those specs were pretty impressive. This Uniden walkie talkie really has excellent features that can be very useful outdoors. The Uniden GMR2872-2CK Waterproof Two-Way Radio is a great catch and would make a great Christmas gift.
