2d season I have used the 36v.cordless. I bought a second battery in a way which would require 5 additional lines{let it be said the price for the stand-alone battery exceeded the price of the unit). Anyway, my property of about 5.5 acres, includes about 1.5 acres planted with perennial rye and with the good California rains we have had his year, the grass is so high it hides the local deer herd ( 5feet in many places.) The cordless cut well but because of the heavy load, the battery would last for about 20 minutes. Hence the need for a second. Also the charger provides for two batteries. So after about 6 sessions the job is done and the cut is nice and close.

great trimmer awkward handle

This is a great trimmer and exactly what i was looking for. plenty of power and only runs out of juice after i sometimes have to cut a 40 foot long ditch that get rather over grown. my only complaint about this trimmer is the ergonomics are a bit off. the trigger should be in the center with the battery hanging off the back to counter balance the weight of the trimmer head- This is how most gas trimmers are for a reason. With the battery positioned between your hands while trimming it can lead to some awkward positions which can wear you out far more easily than a conventional trimmer. All in all though this is exactly what I was looking for. near gas trimmer power without the noise and without the pollution. I wish it came with a second battery but for 160$ i don't expect it.

I'm impressed - with a few reservations...

OK... received trimmer packaged right and in good condition. With all the good reviews, I was expecting a quality, quiet, easy to use trimmer. On first use, within a minute, both cords broke off at the base in medium high grass against a wire fence (my bad). I opened the spool cap and tried to re-thread the strings thru the openings but I had to pull the spool out and at that point the cords unravelled completely into a knotted mess. WTF?! After trying for several minutes to re-wind the cords back into the spool - following the simple instructions - I gave up and planned on packing it up and sending it back in the morning - completely disappointed. HOWEVER, the next morning, I managed to re-wind the cords (not an easy job and nearly impossible by way of the simplistic instructions - as you're dealing with 2 cords at once), put it all back together and started trimming to give it one more try. Now the good part: IT WORKS GREAT! With a little patience and practice - especially with dealing with the cord, I trimmed down 3 foot tall weeds and grass, trimmed around our raised garden beds, around the pond, house, walkway and finished the job just as the battery gave out. It took 15 minutes of fairly hard work on rough, thick weeds and grass. 
IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) Don't buy this trimmer without purchasing the second (expensive!) battery... you'll need it, and the charger was built for two batteries anyway... for obvious reasons. 2) This trimmer is indeed heavy! I was ready for a break by the time the battery discharged. You'll find you need to use the shoulder strap. 3) Dealing with the cord spool is a bit of a challenge. When working properly, the cords do extend themselves and are 'trimmed' by an edge on the guard, however, the cords broke off at the base 2 times in the 15 minutes I used the device. Snapping off the spool cover and re-threading the cord takes some practice. IN CLOSING: Yes, it works great! I'm keeping it! Highly recommend for 'smaller' yards and gardens (one acre). DO consider the 2nd battery as part of the expense. -s

FANTASTIC!!

This unit is extremely well built and every bit as good as most gas powered trimmers. My brother has the $99 version and this unit has much better quality, twice the battery power (36v vs 18v) and larger diameter cutting string. I've been using this for a while now without any problems whatsoever. I did my yard and then loaned it to my curious neighbor who did his yard all on one charge without the battery showing any indication of runnning down. I'm now curious as to how many times I can do my yard on one charge. I kept my gas powered trimmer in case this unit wouldn't measure up but now I'm putting the gas powered trimmer up for sale. I really like the convenience of being able to pick the unit up and use it immediately and not have to mess with a gas/oil mix. For really large yards you might want to pick up an additional battery (just in case) since the unit comes with a dual battery charger in the box. 
I'm very pleased with this purchase and I'm now looking seriously at B&D's 36v mower.

Hey, GALS, thank goodness for the somewhat short battery run time!

I am a woman living on a lot in the Colorado mountains with one steep grade planted in tough native grasses. I love getting outside doing my own chores, and am switching over to all corded or battery operated equipment. This one has power, WOW. I asked the landscaper who helps me with jobs too heavy for me (rock walls, posts around the garden, aerating) to show me the best form for using this. I assembled and used this trimmer for the first time yesterday, and from my awkwardness could tell I wasn't holding and using it correctly. He was VERY impressed with it, and quickly cut some huge swaths of grass. 

Why thank goodness? Because if the battery lasted longer, I'd have kept going until the job was done and I was wasted. Running it while working to keep my footing on the steep slope was a terrific workout, quite enough for one day. I'd be a wreck today if I'd kept going, as it just so much FUN trimming the mess out there down to perfection! 

I agree with all the good things written about this trimmer in the other reviews, so won't be repetetive. Just I LOVE this trimmer.

Perfect Weedeater!!

This is our second season with the B&D 36 volt NST2036 rechargable trimmer. It is a fantastic yard tool We have a 1/2 acre yard to maintain and this is the perfect trimmer for it. The 36 volts makes it as powerful as the gas trimmers we got sick of messing with. We love not having to mix gas and oil and trying to start tempermental gas trimmers. Our yard was too big to drag around a long extension cord and the 18 volt rechargable ones we read about were just not heavy duty enough for what we needed. My only surprise is that this item has such limietd availability in stores. I guess it has been a trial of sorts for B&D. I only see 18 volt ones on their website now which is a shame.

I bought this item a couple weeks ago and it is wonderful. The fact it has the larger battery(more power) and is a dual line trimmer, makes it work better than the rest. I borrowed my brother's single line, 18 volt, B&D trimmer and it did not last for my full 1/2 acre yard. I think the main reason is because of the single line. The grass was long and it seemed to push a lot of the grass aside so I had to go over some spots again and again. With the 36 volt, in long grass, I was able to move right along and get a cleaner and quicker cut. I was also able to turn the machine on its side and I was also able to edge my driveway and sidewalk before the battery ran out. My suggestion to anyone buying a trimmer would be to look for more power and a dual line trimmer and as far as I am concenred this is the best one selling.

Powerful but short battery life

This thing has plenty of power. My three complaints are (1) its kinda heavy (2) the extension needs to be about 9" longer (3) battery takes 12 hours to charge and only lasts about 15-20 minutes at about half speed. If you can get over these three things, its great.

better than expected!!!

I bought this trimmer because I was tired of buying, mixing, and spilling gas and oil. I wasn't sure about what to expect with the rechargeable battery, but it has performed much better than I anticipated it to. Despite being a little heavy, it holds a charge longer than I need to trim and edge my front and back yards, and the shoulder strap helps distribute the excess weight. Granted I have a smaller yard with a pool, but it has not come close to running out before I get everything finished that I need to with it. I would highly recommend this trimmer as a more eco-friendly option, as the 36-volt battery matches the power output of my old gas trimmer. It runs a lot quieter, too.

Very Pleasantly Surprized

I got the 36 volt trimmer on Tuesday and this is Thursday and my first impressions after using it. It does have a lot of plastic but appears to be well made. It is heavy but balances well with shoulder strap. It took 14 hours to charge the battery from dead to full charge. Wednesday morning before work I decided to try it out and WOW I was surprised. It really as powerful as some gas powered trimmers (my Ryobi will now sit). The unit is not as loud as a gas trimmer but it is not silent either. I trimmed tonight late and would not hase done so with my gas trimme because of the noise. 
What about the battery life. I ordered a second battery that has not arrived yet but I started cutting with one battery. On my inital charge I have trimmed 350 ft of sidewalk, drive way and street curb. I have trimmed 250 ft around the house, and 80 square ft of flower bed. I have also trimmed some 260 ft or fence and around the base of 2 tree all on the initial charge. That is approximately 850 lf of trim, and 80 sqare foot of clearing and the battrey is still strong. BTW the grass is quite thick so I am really pleased with the battery life.
If the product holds up I would recommend it highly 

UPDATE!!! MAY 6, 2010 
Now that I have used the product for a month I can say I am truley pleased. It is as powerful asmost gas trimmers. Some notes of caution when using. The trim guard is good for protecting stickes from the string but is open and can sling things towards yuor face.( as all trimmers). Do not make the mistake of thingking that since this is battery powered that it is not powerful. I wear FULL googles as I have had a twig or two sting me in the face. This past week I charged the batteries on Friday to do my yard work on Saturday. Did not the front till Monday. I took the battery out an let it set. Today I just about finished the back yard which is 8 days after I charged the battery. I had the second battery so I finished with no problem. If I had done everything last Saturday it likely would have lasted all the way like it has before. 
It is a bit heavy but I am large so it is not a huge problem. If you are a 125 lb woman it would be harder but it can be balanced with the sling. 
Some people have complaned about the string feeder and the difficultly of stringing it. Once you get the knack it really is quite easy. If I get a chance I will put up a video review of this. 
This really is a great product and I recommend it. BTW I use it as a side walk and driveway trimmer even though it has does not rotate.

Yeah it is what it is...

After reading most of the 62 reviews, I pretty much knew what to expect and I ordered the extra battery. Unfortunately it was shipped separately and I haven't got it yet. So I went out to do the yard with one battery. You know what's coming next. 

My yard is only a heartbeat over 1/4 acre so it's not huge, and I've got two gas powered trimmers in the shed, but I'm sick of the 2 cycle engines with the gas oil mixture so it's been years since I've trimmed. I know that was asking a bit much of the black and decker, but I was only able to do the front, side and half of the back before the battery gave out. Next time I probably could make it through the yard on one cut, if I only have a week's worth of growth. 

Now if I would have had my second battery I would have finished up this time with no problem, so overall I'm satisfied that I got what I paid for. I suspect that B&D has stuck with the ni-cads because they are a known quantity and a Li-Ion version would be double the price and perhaps no one would buy it. I suppose... 

Still there is no perfect solution, extension cords are a pain if you have any size lot, 2 cycles are noisy and hard to start, 4 cycles are big and heavy, 18V is a joke, so for now this B&D with 2 batteries is the best compromise. 

On the plus side this thing has power to spare. The trigger gives you the illusion of variable speed, but it really only has 2 speeds, wide-open and something that is about half speed. I found it nearly impossible to get anything in between, unless you continually bump the throttle. I barely ever opened it wide up as I know that will suck the battery dry in no time. 

I did have one tangle in the cord and had to re-spool it, but all trimmers have that issue. There has been no progress across the industry in 20 years to solve that problem, except for the ones that just gave up and have you insert little cut pieces of cord into the head. 

Overall a decent product for the money. If the price with a spare battery is not too painful and your yard is not too big and you stay on top of it then you can get away from gas and go with this. Just beware of what you are buying.

Rechargeable weed eater B&D 36 volt

This Black and Decker cordless weed eater is balanced very well and uses a hefty string that does last and is easy to rewind on the spool. The battery takes the full 12 hours to recharge as listed in the instructions. The only drawback that I can see on this piece of equipment is that the charge only lasts for 25 minutes of weed eating. That 25 minutes is either in full speed mode or when throttling at a lower speed. The long charge time makes it so a person must have the mindset to do the 25 minutes of weed whacking and then find something else to do until the battery is recharged. This machine will cut anything that a gasoline engine driven weed eater will cut. I was very impressed with that and the fact that just a little bump will give you more string. I would buy this machine again but would buy 2 batteries to get more done in one day. (The charger will charge two batteries at one time.)

Battery powered string trimmer

I have just used the Black & Decker NST2036 Heavy-Duty 36-Volt Cordless Electric String Trimmer. I charge up the battery upon receiving the order. I was leaving on vacation for labor day weekend to Maine. It sat in my basement for 2 weeks before I was able to use it. I have approximately 3/4 of an acre to trim, it did half of the land with plenty of power left for the rest. I love it as I don't have to string extension cords for the other trimmer which I just got rid of in a yard sale. You can't find one better.
