The subconscious mind controls 95% of your behaviour. If your behaviour is something that isn't helping you to create your dreams and goals, then all your efforts towards the formation of your dream life will constantly be thwarted. Your subconscious autopilot actions are either going towards your idealized intentions or you are they aren't. This leads us to search for the truth about our beliefs so that we can ensure that our dreams are being lovingly nurtured for a bountiful harvest and not being bludgeoned and crushed into powdered despair.
Subconscious beliefs are formed in several ways.
Environment, family, peers, experiences and traumas lead the brigade.
Environment - If you were raised on a tiny island with albino lepers, you would believe that thats how life is. You would assume that everyone has light white skin and hair and that appendages occasionally fall off. You wouldn't be fearful of leprosy or albinos because that's what completely pervaded your environment.
Family - If your mom and dad kept telling you that this whole island was the entire universe and that nothing and no one existed outside of the island, and that everyone is an albino leper that walks on their hands, you would have to believe it's true. The environment supports that belief and so do the words of your care givers.
Peers - With all the albino leper friends that you'd have, it would further drive the nail in that this is how life is. And then your leper albino friends would go play hopscotch and hide and seek but they would only do it at night time because all your buddies are sensitive to daylight. And then for lunch all your peers would have the same lunch. They might all have mustard ice cream sandwiches. If your all your friends are eating them, for sure you're going to at least try one because you would have been influenced enough to have the belief that it might be good.
Experiences - Everyday, all the aforementioned events would keep presenting themselves to you. Now if everyone in the neighbourhood walked around on their hands and did cartwheels when they were angry, that's exactly how you would express anger and walk around. You would be living in an entire village of hand walking, angry cart-wheeling albino lepers eating mustard ice cream sandwiches.
Trauma - Now lets say you decide to try walking around upright. And then the entire village laughed and pointed at you and then beat you up. And the same thing happens every day for a week. After all those traumatic experiences, how likely is it that you would try to continue walking on your feet?
Would you risk taking the daily poundings because you felt in your core that your way feels better, or would you live a life of quiet desperation while you wondered if this is really all there is?
So this is how our beliefs are formed.
Environment, traumas, experiences, peers and parenting.
Now, let's say that you're still on this island and that you find a book. And this book talks about a place where people are healthy and tanned and they walk on their feet and for food they eat delicious meals and that there's billions of people around and how doing angry cartwheels is something that you only see in traditional athletic events that occur every 4 years.
So if you were reading this book while still living on this island and had all those weird yet constantly reinforced experiences, which one would you think is most true? The book or the lessons you've gleaned from your parents, peers and environment?
Now lets say you had the job of changing your beliefs and had to convince yourself that the life you are living is based on mountains of misinformation. How would you go about doing this?
Would you really suggest that those beliefs could be removed with affirmations? What about a subliminal audio?
Would you ever try to use emotional freedom technique to tap away all those deeply indoctrinated beliefs that you've learned after all those years on that weird island? Is that what's going to unravel the tapestry of your perception of life? A little bit of tapping?
Before we continue, ask yourself what kind of beliefs you may have that are based on absurdity but you still deeply believe to be true. If you recognize a few, know that beliefs are hard to change and changing is not enjoyable because it can mean facing reality in a way that you may not be fully prepared to deal with.
Getting back to that person on the crazy island, if we really wanted to have all those crazy beliefs smashed, the fastest way to do it would be to drop him off in China. That would freak him right out. Everything that he thought his world is about would completely collapse.
At first he would be confused and might vehemently deny the new reality that completely and undeniably surrounds him. He might even get angry. He would certainly be confused. But confusion is the step that precedes learning. If you are wanting to reprogram your mind and get off the isle of insanity, it's going to take putting your brain through some confusion.
That's how you change your subconscious beliefs. You give yourself the opportunity to temporarily confuse your mind and then look at life in ways that support you. This is what NeuroLinguistic programming and visualizations and hypnosis is all about. It's about causing your mind to perceive things in differing ways so that you're self imposed limitations can be re-evaluated and cleared to further enable you to easily move towards the life you want.
