Move Fast and Get New Football Kits First

Football never sleeps. Anyone who's lived in the UK for more than a year knows that. The World Cup is over; the new season is on the way. And all those lovely new football kits are already available to buy. Currently, at new kit pre season let's all get ready to go bonkers bargain prices. The guys and girls that stock and sell these things, after all, aren't stupid. They know that we've all suffered, as a nation, under the iron hammer of a three year financial meltdown. And they know that they need to sell their stock in order to make money. So why not, they reason, make everyone happy – offer the public brand new football kits at discount prices, get them all kitted up and ready for a new season – and make some money into the bargain? Perfect.

There are, of course, places and then places to get hold of football shirts, shorts, socks, training jerseys and so on. The shirts will always be the most popular, so here's where the best choice is found. Received wisdom: there's very little need, these days, to actually go out in the pouring summer rain in order to try and find football gear in person. Get online, take a look around, and prepare to find some pretty astonishing deals right from the comfort of the living room.

There is, for example, an aptly named new web site, FootballTops.com which has sourced all the new Premiership and Football League football kits for what look like trade prices: a saving that shows in the actual retail prices they're giving their customers. Web sites in general are better able to sell football gear for affordable prices, because they tend not to have the physical upkeep of a shop to worry about. Sports stores, even ground based team stores, require rent payments, mortgages, buildings insurance and so on – while a lot of these football clobber sites are actually out sourcing their kit supply straight from the manufacturer, which means they don't even have to pay for a warehouse. One can imagine the difference in pricing structure. It almost makes one fear for the future of "real world", actual store based football kits suppliers.

A kit manufacturer will be selling their gear for the same price, roughly, to all their customers – including these new web sites. Now, that price is a trade price, which is significantly less than the retail price. The trade price is all the manufacturer needs – that's what they have calculated as the right price for them to make a profit on their kits, given the quantities they make and the amount it costs them to make them. So far, so good. Some online retailers, then, buy the kits from the manufacturer at that price – but have the manufacturer send the football kits themselves, directly to the purchaser. It's a technique long popularised by the most famous and successful online retailers in the UK – and it means that fans worried about their bank balances can still get kitted out in the new seasons finest. Perfect.
