How to Choose a Cordless Drill
Before you purchase your cordless drill, you must have considered the power of the tool. Power comes from the battery that goes with it. You will find a lot of batteries with a range of 2.4 to 36 volts but 9.6 volts to 14.4 volt range are recommended for a cordless drill.
Another consideration is the price. Some cordless drills range from $40 to $1000 or more. The higher the voltage the higher the price it tends to be. However, keep in mind that quality comes with each price tag. The size of the cordless drills has a big impact. Size does not determine the level of performance. Higher voltage cordless drills can generate power and will make your work efficient.
Batteries are the source of energy for cordless drills to function. NiCad battery cells can deliver power steadily, which charging rate is fast. NiCad battery cells got its name from the combination of nickel and cadmium, which are components of this battery. NiCad batteries can be recharged up to a thousand of time before they drain down and render unusable. Remember to follow safety instruction when disposing this kind of battery.
NiCad batteries contain poisonous toxic metals, when mishandled can be a health and environment hazard. You shouldn't just throw them away. Instead, bring them to a battery recycling center. This is the safest way to handle this type of battery.
You can also use nickel metal hydride type of battery or what we call NiMH batteries. This type of battery does not contain cadmium and nickel, which makes this type of battery to be less harmful to the environment. But it is more expensive that the NiCad batteries. This type of battery have a fewer recharges, too.
The recharging cycle is only 50 percent lower than the average. It is best that you check the batteries of your cordless drills to determine if there is a need to buy for an uninterrupted work. You do not want to be bothered by working on your wood works when a battery run half low and a back-up battery is not around. You must also consider the type of drill or driver your cordless drills have.
You can choose your drill from a wide array of options in the market. This will make you cordless drills to work more efficiently and will be able to drill pilot holes and drive fasteners faster.
The variable speed of the cordless drills is another most important feature that you should consider. When you deal with a hard material you need to use a slower speed to drill while soft materials need faster rotation. An adjustable clutch is a lot helpful when you want to adjust speed of your cordless drills according to the material you are working on.
