A Golf Putting Drill to Measure Your Accuracy

If you want to test the accuracy in your putting stroke I have an excellent golf putting drill that you can try. In order to hit straight putts the putter club face needs to be square at impact. There could be a number of reasons of why your not striking the ball square at impact and therefore missing putts. But this simple drill will highlight where you are and if you need to make changes in your putting fundamentals.

I call this the two ball putting drill. Simply take two golf balls and sit them down on the green so they are touching. Now go and take your normal putting stroke striking both balls at the same time. If your putter club face is square at impact the balls will be hit at the same time and also end up at the same distance. If this is the result you get then you know your putting fundamentals are correct.

However if one of the balls move before the other then you know that either the toe or heel of the club head got there sooner. If the ball on the inside or closer to you goes farther then the heel of the putter got there sooner. What this means is that the putter club face was open at impact. Most likely you are swinging the putter from inside the target line or possibly your wrists are flexing at impact.

On the other hand if the ball farther away from you goes farther then your club face was closed at impact. A possible cause for this was that you are experiencing a putting stroke where the club is coming from outside the target line at impact.

The goal of this drill is to be able to consistently strike both balls at the same time so they will roll the exact distance. By not being able to do this golf putting drill consistently you will be missing putts by not staying on the intended target line. What you then need to do is review each fundamental of your putting stroke in order to pin point the problem. Double check and review your posture, body alignment, grip and grip pressure. Make sure your upper body movement is correct and that your lower body and head is stable.

Another possible reason for not performing this drill correctly is that you are looking up to soon. Turning your head before the entire follow through length of your stoke is complete. This is a very common problem with the average golfer. A helpful tip for this problem is counting to two after your follow through before looking up. Continue making adjustments until you have found the problem. Once you feel you have made the right adjustments continue practicing this drill until you can consistently pass the test twenty to thirty times in a row. In addition this golf putting drill can be practiced at home in a carpeted room or hallway.

Keep in mind that the ability to pass this test on a consistent basis is not easy and will demand a lot of patients and practice to master. However the rewards are great and you will be on your way to becoming and excellent putter and lowering your score. Once you develop the ability to strike the ball square at impact incorporate other effective golf putting drills into your practice routine. The key to mastering putting is having a good understanding of the proper fundamentals and practicing with golf putting drills that get results.
