Floor tile mortar is the compound which sticks your floor tiles down solid onto your subfloor. It normally comes in the form of a dry dust when bought, and by simply adding water, forms a paste-like substance suitable for floor tiling. There are many different types and brands available for the various applications, but here I will give a brief insight into the basics of what is commonly found.
When using a steel wire mesh as your subfloor option, once your mesh is properly attached to the flooring then you will need a product know as Scratch Coat Mortar. This is basically a sandy mortar which, when mixed with water to give the correct consistency, is poured over the complete floor and left to settle almost naturally. With the help of gravity, this will actually self-level your floor if mixed properly, and require very little effort in which you have to manually spread out the compound. This method of subflooring is ideal for when you have a wooden floor with many uneven dips and warps.
If you are laying down marble or granite floor tiles, then the use of a specific marble and granite fortified premium mortar will be necessary. This mortar is white in color, and nothing else but should be used as a substitute, otherwise all your hard work and expense will just simply go to waste. The reason being for this is that if a darker colored mortar was used to affix your granite or marble floor tiles, then the color would eventually bleed through the stone and completely destroy the natural beauty of your tiled floor. I can't stress this enough, but when laying either marble or granite floor tiles; you MUST use a WHITE mortar.
Now with that being said when floor tiling using any other type of tile, then the use of regular grey mortar will do the job just fine. These can come in the forms of either fortified or standard thin-set mortars, but depending on your application, then your local hardware store should be able to give you the best advice on which to use for your appropriate floor tiling project.
One final point which I must also stress with regards to tile mortar, concerns the use of Ceramic Tile Adhesive. DO NOT USE THIS WHEN FLOOR TILING. It may seem like a great idea because you can buy this mortar compound pre-mixed, so basically you can just scoop it out and slap it on ready for attaching your floor tiles, but actually it's not as simple as that. Instead of taking 24 hours to dry like regular mortar, this can take up to around one week, so if you were to use it on floor tiles, then basically the room you tiled would be out of bounds for a considerable amount of time to prevent shifting of laid tiles.
Another big disadvantage with this is that it does not mix well with water. Any wet tiles for example that have just been cut using a wet tile saw, or even splash-out from the tile saw itself, can inhibit the adhesive properties of this product. The introduction of water will quite simply turn this adhesive into one big mess. When doing floor tiles, stick with the tried and tested way the professionals continue to use of mixing floor tile mortar from scratch, and avoid trying to cut any corners.
