Shapers Cutters

A Gear shaper cutter is essentially a gear that has a teeth, which is relieved for providing appropriate cutting edges and clearances. A shaper cutter is a type of machine tool that uses linear relative motion between the workpiece and a single-point cutting tool to machine a linear toolpath. Its cut is analogous to that of a lathe, except that it is linear instead of helical. A shaper is analogous to a planer, but smaller, and with the cutter riding a ram that moves above a stationary workpiece, rather than the entire workpiece moving beneath the cutter.  

A shaper cutter operates by moving a hardened cutting tool backwards and forwards across the workpiece. On the return stroke of the ram the tool is lifted clear of the workpiece, reducing the cutting action to one direction only. The companies tried hard to make cutters according to customer's specifications so that their needs should be fulfilled. Gear Shaper cutters are designed and produced for cutting any type of gear, internal or external, spur or helical. They can also be designed to cut splines, serrations, sprockets or other involute forms.

The different types of shapers cutters are available depending upon the different cutting applications of the cutters. Shank type shapers cutters is used to cut internal gears of small diameter and spline holes. They can also be designed for external gears depending on the job. The shapers cutters can be tailor made depending upon the client's specifications. Hub type shapers cutters can be used for roughing & finishing external gears where it is not feasible to use external disc type cutters. Disc type shapers cutters are those in which cutters are of disc shaped which have the general utility to give roughing or finish form to cut spur, helical and spline gears.  

Deep counterbore type shapers cutters can be used for roughing and finishing external gears where it is not feasible to use external disc type cutters. Disc type helical shapers cutter is applied to cut helical gears. The helix angle of the gear determines the number of teeth that the cutter would have. Disc shaper cutters can also be designed to cut splines, serrations, sprockets or other involute forms.Spiral Bevel cutters are crown shaped and they are used to generate spiral bevel gears. Special gear shaper cutters used for chain sporckets, timing gears and large module cutters.
